This half term, Year 5 have been developing their persuasive writing language skills. Using the stimuli ‘Kick’ by Mitch Johnson, they have been writing to persuade against the use of child labour which sadly still happens around the world today.

Throughout our lessons, they have developed persuasive sentences in a letter to the footballer John Stones to persuade him that sporting brands must prove that their kits have only been made in Child Labour Free Zones. We learned some shocking statistics along the way.

Following our sentence stacking lessons, the children have written their own letters to persuade. They were given the option to write to Mrs Maclean (CEO), Mrs Bloomfield (Principal) or Mrs Turner (PE Lead). The children were writing to persuade their chosen adult that PE equipment should only be ordered by Fairtrade suppliers to ensure that they have been made without the use of child labour.

The children drafted their plans and wrote their letters. Following informal feedback, the children then edited their work. (E1 = means they must check for spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, E2 = means they should attempt to rewrite something to improve it and E3 = means that they should add in or redraft a section of their work.) You can see from the examples below where the children have edited their work in purple pen.

Once they had edited their letters they then typed them up. Miss Allen has emailed examples of their letters to their chosen adults. Hopefully they will find them to be very persuasive.
