This week, our Year 5 classroom was buzzing with excitement. Not over a new gadget or a surprise visitor, but over something far more ancient: Roman numerals! As part of our Maths curriculum, we have been exploring number systems from history, and what better way to reinforce learning than with a lively game of Roman Numeral Bingo?

The rules were simple: each child received a bingo card filled with Roman numerals, and Miss Williams called out the corresponding Arabic numbers (like 14, 29, or 50). The challenge? Convert the number in your head and check your card for the matching Roman numeral. Cue the furrowed brows, quick mental calculations, and triumphant shouts of “Bingo!”

What made this activity so effective was its blend of fun and focus. Children were not only revising their understanding of Roman numerals, but also sharpening their mental maths. It was lovely to see pupils helping each other decode tricky numerals like XLIV or LXXX and cheering when someone got a line. This kind of playful learning is a reminder that Maths does not have to be confined to work in books.
