To mark World Mental Health Day, our Year 5 pupils took part in a powerful and uplifting workshop led by the inspiring team at Ordinary Magic. The session focused on the importance of looking after both our physical and mental health, and gave children practical strategies to support their wellbeing. Throughout the workshop, children explored what it means to be mentally healthy and learned about the different ways we can care for our minds, just like we do our bodies. They discussed how sleep, exercise, talking to someone and taking breaks can all help us feel better when we’re having a tough day.

One of the highlights was learning about the idea of a mental health toolbox- a collection of tools and techniques we can use when we’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or low. From breathing exercises and journaling to listening to music or spending time with friends, the children were encouraged to think about what works best for them.

To celebrate their learning, we launched a competition to design a personal mental health toolbox. The creativity and thoughtfulness in the entries were truly heart-warming. Some of the winning designs are below. Each design showcased unique ideas; from illustrated toolboxes filled with positive affirmations and sensory items, to beautifully decorated kits with drawings of nature, pets, and hobbies that bring joy.

We are incredibly proud of Year 5 for their enthusiasm, openness, and creativity. Thank you to Ordinary Magic for delivering such a meaningful workshop and helping our children build lifelong skills for emotional wellbeing.
