This week, our Year 4 children continued to explore Repeated Patterns. We discussed that patterns are everywhere – on our clothes, in nature and even in the buildings around us.

Inspired by the work of pattern designer Rachel Parker, we created seamless repeat patterns using a ‘square tile repeat’using different materials and shapes.

The process:

1. We used our rulers and a sharp pencil and divide the page into four. We numbered our squares 1-4.
2. We turned over the paper so that we were working on the blank side. We started arranging our shapes in the middle of the square. The beauty of collage is that you can keep moving everything around until you are happy. We thought carefully about the colours and shapes that we were using and how one shape plays off the other one. Some shapes we overlapped for effect. 
3. Once we were happy, we glued  glue everything into place.
4. Now for the clever bit – we turned over the page over and cut along the lines so that we had four squares. We turned our squares face down and rearranged them as shown in a 3-4-1-2 order. Using masking tape, we taped the squares back together carefully.
5. Finally, we turned our page back over – any shape that travelled off the edge on one side reappeared again on the opposite edge.
