Over the last two weeks in maths, Rowan Class have been busy exploring patterns and shapes. The children have been spotting patterns all around our classroom and creating their own repeating patterns using a variety of materials.

We’ve learned about the ‘unit of repeat, the part of the pattern that repeats and talked about different types of patterns, including AB patterns (like red blue red blue) and ABB patterns (like red blue blue-red blue blue).

One of our favourite activities was making patterns using shapes on the carpet. Everyone worked really hard to design and explain their own patterns.

We have also been busy spotting circles and triangles in our environment and learning how to describe them. We’ve discovered that 2D shapes can’t be picked up, but we can see them, draw them, and talk about them.

We learned that a triangle has three straight sides and three corners, and they can look different depending on how they’re arranged. A circle, on the other hand, has one curved side and no corners, which felt a bit strange at first! Lots of children thought a circle had zero sides because it looks like a zero!

To help us understand, we used play dough to make our own circles, thinking about how we curved one piece of dough all the way around to make the shape. We also had fun making triangles and talking about their sides and corners.
