Today marked a day that would remain etched in the memories of the children who were evacuated from their homes and sent to Devon for safety. We are pleased to inform you that everyone arrived in the countryside safely. The train was crowded, filled with young evacuees, many of whom had to stand for the entire journey. Despite the discomfort, they remained cheerful, singing songs and sharing snacks to lift each other’s spirits.

Upon arrival, the children faced a long walk to the village hall. Their legs ached, but they pressed on, filled with a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation. At the hall, kind volunteer officers welcomed them warmly and helped them settle in. Though being far from home felt strange, the volunteers’ kindness made the transition easier.

A highlight of the day came when the post arrived. The children eagerly rushed to collect letters from home. Some laughed, others cried, but all felt a renewed connection to their families.

Later, the canteen ladies—Audrey and Mavis—treated the children to hot drinks and toast. After such a tiring journey, the simple meal felt like a feast, and the toast was declared the most delicious they had ever tasted.

One by one, villagers arrived to collect the children and take them to their new homes. While some were chosen quickly, others waited patiently, supporting one another and staying calm.

Though they missed their families deeply, the children remained hopeful. They looked forward to the day the war would end and they could return home. Until then, they vowed to be brave and take care of one another.
