Year 2 enjoyed a fascinating and interactive day with Tara from Safety Seymour (Bonanza Creative). The workshop began with an introduction to our superhero friend, Seymour, and the children enthusiastically struck their own superhero poses to set the tone for the day.

We then explored the dangers of Carbon Monoxide, learning that it is a gas we cannot see, hear, taste, touch, or smell. To help remember this important fact, the children used actions linked to each of the senses.

A video helped us to understand which appliances in our homes might produce Carbon Monoxide, and afterwards the children stepped into a ‘time machine’. They travelled back to the past, becoming chimney sweeps through role-play. Working in small groups, they imagined what life would have been like for children who had to clean chimneys many years ago.

Later in the day, the children acted out how Carbon Monoxide affects different vital organs in the body. Using sound effects and movement, they explored the impact on the heart, lungs, and brain, helping them to understand why this invisible gas can be so dangerous. This creative activity brought science to life and deepened their awareness of how important it is to stay safe.

The day ended on a high note, with each child receiving a special goodie bag containing a keyring and a free Carbon Monoxide detector to take home.
