This week, Yew Tree Primary had the privilege of welcoming Solihull’s MP, Saqib Bhatti, as part of our preparations for UK Parliament Week. Mr Bhatti led an inspiring assembly for Years 1–6, explaining what Parliament is and sharing his vision for improving Solihull. We also learned about his role in ensuring educational services are of a high standard so that all children can achieve their best learning.

After the assembly, our School Council had the exciting opportunity to interview Mr Bhatti. They asked thoughtful questions, including:

• What is your favourite part about being an MP? Helping people and making a difference in the community.
• What is the hardest part? When he can’t help people because of a lack of funding.
• What does an MP do? Helping people, raising money, and being a part of meetings where he listens to community concerns and offers support.
• What do I need to do to become an MP one day? Work hard in school and care about your community and the people in it. Continue raising money for charities! 

The conversation wasn’t all serious! We also discovered Mr Bhatti’s hobbies and favourite Netflix series, and shared our own interests, like football.

Our School Council then rose to the occasion by presenting their ideas for improving Yew Tree, including:

• Better sports equipment
• More litter-picking initiatives
• Increased funding for technology

School Council will be writing to Mr Bhatti to ask for his support in creating a computer room or increasing the number of iPads available for computing lessons! We discussed how this would help us with our learning and help make school better for everyone! 

A huge well done to our School Council for asking brilliant questions and representing Yew Tree so confidently! And a big thank you to Mr Bhatti for taking the time to visit us and for generously donating to our Children in Need fundraiser.
