Light it up! Building complete circuits
A circuit is a pathway that electricity travels along. For electricity to flow, the path must be complete – no gaps! If there’s a break, the electricity can’t reach the bulb or buzzer and nothing will happen.
Today we put our learning into practise by experimenting with building our own complete (in most cases) circuits.
What did we use?
- Battery – This is the power source. It gives the electricity energy to move.
- Wires – To connect the components in our circuit together.
- Bulb – This lights up when electricity flows through it.
- Buzzer – This makes a sound when the circuit is complete.
- Switch – This is like a gate. It can open or close the circuit.

When the circuits were complete, the bulbs lit up and the buzzers buzzed – what a success!

When we built circuits, some didn’t work. Why? Because they were incomplete!
Here are some reasons:
- The wires weren’t connected properly.
- The switch was open (so the path was broken).
- The battery wasn’t connected to both ends of the circuit.
Electricity needs a full loop to travel. If there’s a gap, it’s like a road with a missing bridge – cars can’t cross, and electricity can’t either!
