This week, Year 5 have been working hard to improve their arithmetic and reasoning skills through a series of problem-solving challenges. One of our favourite activities was tackling a number maze where the goal was to make exactly 100. The children had to think carefully about their choices, finding both the lowest and highest possible routes through the maze. It was a fantastic way to practise calculation strategies while also encouraging perseverance and creativity.

We also explored additional problems online, where pupils had to choose the correct answer to a calculation and then prove it! This helped everyone to strengthen their reasoning skills and explain their thinking clearly.

A big highlight has been developing our Maths oracy – learning to talk about Maths confidently, justify answers, and share strategies with others. It’s been wonderful to see how our communication skills in Maths are growing, not just in English lessons! Year 5 are becoming true problem solvers and we’re excited to see how these skills will continue to grow.
