Year 1 have had a fantastic time this week investigating materials and discovering what everyday objects are made from. To begin our learning, we explored a range of items laid out on the tables — from wooden spoons to metal keys, plastic bottles, fabric squares, and glass jars.

The children enjoyed handling each object, talking about how it felt, and learning the names of the different materials such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, fabric, and rubber. We discussed why certain materials are used for particular objects — for example, why a window is made from glass or why a chair might be made from wood.

After our hands-on exploration, the children moved on to a creative task in their books. They each chose eight objects, drew detailed pictures of them, and wrote sentences describing what material each object is made from. This helped us practise using scientific vocabulary and thinking carefully about the properties of materials.

The class showed brilliant curiosity and teamwork throughout the lesson. We’re excited to keep building on this learning as we continue our science topic this term.
