This week in Art, Year 4 have been exploring the wonderful world of still life, taking inspiration from classic arrangements of everyday objects – but with a creative twist!

To begin, the children studied a selection of objects arranged at the front of the classroom. Instead of drawing the whole still life at once, they focused on each item separately, carefully observing lines, shapes, textures and details. From milk cartoons and jugs to fruit and patterned fabrics, each child chose how to represent the objects in their own style.

Once the individual drawings were complete, the children cut out each object and began the exciting process of arranging their pieces to create a collaged still life. Using black card as a background helped their artwork stand out beautifully, giving each composition a bold and vibrant finish. The children took great care in the layout – experimenting with placement, overlapping objects for depth and thoughtfully considering space to create balance and interest.

The final outcomes are unique, expressive and full of personality. Each collage shows the children’s ability to observe closely, make decisions as artists and create something that is entirely their own.
