This term, Year 1 have moved on to a brand‑new geography topic: comparing hot and cold places in the world. We began by introducing the word climate, talking about what it means and how different places can be very hot, very cold, or somewhere in between.

To bring this to life, we looked closely at images of the Sahara Desert. The children were fascinated by the sand dunes, the bright sunshine, and the huge open spaces. Using our atlases, we then worked together to find the Sahara Desert on a map, before colouring it on our own world maps. The children showed brilliant teamwork and map‑reading skills.

Later in the term, we’ll continue exploring continents and oceans. To help us remember them, we listened to our favourite continent and ocean songs, which the children absolutely loved.
