This week, Year 6 took great strides in their music learning as they explored what it truly means to perform together as an ensemble. Their focus was on tempo (keeping a steady beat) and listening carefully to one another so the whole group could stay perfectly in time.

To put their skills into practice, the children learned how to play the slow version of the Ghostbusters theme, a piece that challenged them to concentrate, coordinate and collaborate.

Each row of the classroom became its own section of the ensemble, using different types of instruments:

• 🎹 Keyboards
• 🌈 Boomwhackers
• 🔔 Chime bars

Within these groups, every child was given a specific note or musical part to focus on. This meant that every player was essential as each sound contributed to the overall performance. The children quickly discovered just how important it is to stay aware of the tempo and listen closely to others, especially when everyone is playing a different part of the same song.

From the photographs, it’s clear to see just how focused they were eyes on their instruments, counting carefully, and waiting for the exact right moment to play. Their commitment to teamwork really paid off, and the result was a wonderfully coordinated performance full of confidence and enjoyment.
