Year 6 Are Buzzing About Their Steady Hand Games!
Year 6 have had an exciting few weeks in Design and Technology as they took on the challenge of creating their very own steady hand games. This project combined creativity, problem‑solving and electrical circuit work and the results were fantastic!
Researching What Makes a Great Steady Hand Game

To begin, we explored examples of existing steady hand games. Pupils discussed what made them fun, challenging and well designed, paying particular attention to appearance, durability and how clear the sense of achievement was when a player succeeded. This helped us form our success criteria for the project.
We agreed that our games needed to be:
- Reliable
- Well made and sturdy
- Bright and attractive to look at
- Rewarding to play
These criteria guided every step of the design and making process.
Designing and Constructing the Base

Once the success criteria were set, pupils sketched out their own design ideas, thinking carefully about layout, materials and the shape of the wire path. Then came the practical part!
We started by constructing the box and base of each game. This required careful measuring, cutting and assembling to ensure everything was secure and safe to use.

Building the Circuit
With the base completed, pupils moved on to assembling their electrical circuit. They attached one crocodile clip and wire to the main game wire and the other to the handheld wand. They learned that when the wand touches the wire, the circuit closes causing either a lightbulb to glow or a buzzer to sound.

Finishing Touches and Evaluation
We are genuinely thrilled with the final products. The games are sturdy, functional and visually impressive. Pupils demonstrated fantastic craftsmanship and teamwork throughout.
Finally, everyone evaluated their finished game using our success criteria. There was a wonderful sense of pride as pupils reflected on what had gone well and what they might refine next time.

A Buzz-Worthy Success!
We’re absolutely buzzing with the results – both literally and figuratively! Year 6 should feel incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved. Their steady hand games are a brilliant showcase of creativity, resilience and technical skill.
