Last Thursday, Year 5 threw themselves into World Book Day with all the enthusiasm and imagination you’d expect from a class of brilliant readers. The classroom was bursting with colour as the children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters- everything from wizards and warriors to animals, heroes, and even a few footballers! But the day took an unexpected turn…

🖍️ The Crayons Quit… or Did They?

When the children arrived, they discovered a very dramatic letter waiting for them. Miss Williams, who had transformed into the blue crayon, had quit! She insisted she would not return until her class wrote a persuasive letter explaining why she should stay, how they would treat her better, and why blue is such an important colour. Year 5 rose to the challenge. They planned, drafted, edited, and improved their letters with determination. Their arguments were passionate, thoughtful, and, most importantly, very persuasive. By the end of the morning, the crayons (their teachers) were finally convinced to stay. Crisis averted!

🎭 Performing Poetry with Confidence

In the afternoon, the children turned their attention to poetry. Working in small groups, they practised reading a poem aloud, focusing on fluency, expression and confidence. Each group performed in front of the class, showing fantastic teamwork and growing confidence. It was wonderful to see everyone supporting one another and celebrating each performance. World Book Day in Year 5 was full of creativity, laughter, and learning. From persuasive writing to performance poetry, the children showed just how imaginative and capable they are. We’re already looking forward to next year’s adventure.
