As part of our science unit on plant and animal life cycles, Year 5 took part in a hands‑on investigation to deepen their understanding of how flowering plants reproduce. This week, the children explored the different parts of a flower through a practical dissection activity.

Armed with curiosity (and a lily!), the children carefully took apart the flower to identify key structures such as the petals, leaves, stem, stigma, stamen, filament and anther. They worked with impressive precision, making sure each part remained intact so they could examine it closely and discuss its role in the life cycle of a plant.

It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn through exploration, seeing first‑hand how each part contributes to the process of pollination and reproduction. Their focus and enthusiasm made the lesson a real success. A brilliant practical session and a great step forward in our understanding of the natural world.
