Year 3 have made an exciting start to their new history unit on Ancient Egypt by learning about the River Nile and why it was so important to the ancient Egyptians.

We began by locating Egypt on a map of north-east Africa and identifying the River Nile running through the country. We discussed how most of Egypt is desert, which helped us understand why people chose to settle along the river. The children quickly realised that without the Nile, life in ancient Egypt would have been extremely difficult.

We discovered that the Nile was the centre of everyday life. It provided water for drinking and washing, helped people to travel and trade, and supported farming through its yearly floods, which left fertile soil perfect for growing crops. We also learned about papyrus plants, which grew along the riverbanks and were used to make paper for writing.

The children demonstrated their learning by creating detailed factual posters, using key historical vocabulary to explain why the River Nile was such an important natural resource. Take a look at their brilliant work to find out more about this amazing river!
