This week, the Dragonflies have been diving into the magical world of castles, inspired by our book of the week, In the Castle. The story sparked lots of curiosity about towers, drawbridges and the people who might have lived inside these grand buildings. To build on this interest, the children had the chance to create their very own castle using a large cardboard box.

The process was completely child‑led. The Dragonflies chose their own paint colours and worked together to transform the box into a castle that reflected their ideas and imagination. Some children focused on painting the walls, while others added details like windows and doors. Once the paint had dried, they proudly added flags to the top, giving their castle a finishing touch that made it feel truly complete.

This activity supported a wide range of skills. As they painted and decorated, the children developed their fine motor control and hand–eye coordination. Choosing colours and deciding where to place each detail encouraged decision‑making and independence. Working alongside their friends helped them practise communication, cooperation and sharing resources. Most importantly, the project allowed them to express their creativity freely and confidently.

The Dragonflies were fully absorbed in the experience from start to finish, and it was wonderful to see how proud they were of the castle they built together. Their enthusiasm for the story and their imaginative play has brought the world of castles to life in a meaningful and memorable way.
