This week, our classroom was buzzing with creativity as the children immersed themselves in a wonderful project combining music, art, and design technology. We began our topic by learning about the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky, who is well known for his abstract paintings and his belief that colour and shape can represent sound and emotion.

The children were fascinated by how Kandinsky “painted music,” using bold colours, lines, and patterns to express feelings and rhythm.

Building on this inspiration, the children moved on to an exciting art challenge- to design and create their own musical instruments using junk modelling materials. All of the children were set the task of creating their own guitar using plastic bottles, elastic bands, paper and paint. 

Working collaboratively in groups, they:

• Planned their designs, discussing ideas and sharing roles
• Carefully constructed their guitars, thinking about how to make them both sturdy and functional

This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to practise teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. They showed great creativity in adapting their designs and overcoming challenges along the way.

One of the highlights of the project was seeing the children work together so effectively. They listened to each other’s ideas, made collective decisions, and took pride in their shared creations. The sense of achievement was clear as each group presented their finished guitars to the class.
