This week, Year 4 have fully embraced Creative Arts Week with a wonderful project inspired by nature with this years theme being Flourish. The children have been busy designing and creating a stunning piece of artwork titled ‘Birds in the Trees’ which will soon be proudly displayed in our upcoming gallery exhibition in a few week time.

Using a combination of painting techniques and careful drawing, Year 4 have explored texture, colour and form to bring their ideas to life. The results are already looking impressive, and we cannot wait to share the finished pieces!

Each child began with an A3 piece of card and used masking tape to carefully create the outline of a tree. This allowed them to think about the shape of the trunk and branches before adding colour.

Next, the children painted over the entire page, including the tape, experimenting with different techniques. They were encouraged to work with only a limited colour palette, which helped to create bold, striking, and interesting backgrounds.

Once the paint had dried, the most exciting part began – peeling off the masking tape! This revealed a crisp, white tree shape against the colourful background, creating a beautiful contrast.

To bring the trees to life, the children then used biro pens to draw intricate details such as:

• Bark patterns
• Branches
• Texture
• And finally adding birds to the branches

The children learned how to make their trees appear more three-dimensional by using artistic techniques like:

• Curved lines to show shape and form
• Light and dark shading
• Cross hatching to add depth and realism

The level of focus and creativity shown has been fantastic, and each piece is wonderfully unique.
