Sweet Creations in Design and Technology!
This half term, Year 3 took on an exciting Design and Technology challenge: to design and make their very own seasonal fruit tart, fit for a restaurant!
We began by exploring different climates around the world and discussing what the word seasonal means. We learnt that seasonal foods are foods that are naturally ready to be harvested at a particular time of year. This helped us to think carefully about which fruits would be suitable for our tarts.
Next came one of our favourite parts of the project – the tasting! The children used their senses to explore a variety of fruits, including plums, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and strawberries. Some of these fruits were completely new to some of us! Before tasting, we carefully discussed the colours, shapes and textures we could see. When it was time to try them, the classroom was filled with lots of descriptive vocabulary, including sweet, sour, tangy and delicious.

Using their research and tasting experiences, the children then designed their very own fruit tart. They carefully selected their ingredients and thought about how they could create an attractive, summery dessert worthy of a restaurant menu.
This week, we finally brought our sweet creations to life! A huge thank you to Debbie for baking the tarts for us in the school kitchen, so they were ready to enjoy and take home.

Of course, we couldn’t resist carrying out a taste test first!

Well done, Year 3! Your fruit tarts looked fantastic and tasted even better. We were so impressed with the creativity, care and enthusiasm shown throughout the project. Your creations were certainly sweet, summery and restaurant-worthy!
