Exploring Variation: Are We All Vitruvian?
In our science lesson, we investigated an interesting idea from history: the theory behind Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. This famous drawing was based on Vitruvius’ belief that a person’s arm span should be equal to their height. But is that true for us?
Our Investigation
We worked in groups to measure each other’s height and arm span. Then, we divided our height by our arm span and rounded the answer to three decimal places. According to the theory, if your ratio is close to 1, you match the ideal proportions Vitruvius described.

What Did We Find?
The results were surprising! Only a few of us had an arm span exactly the same as our height. Most of us were either slightly above or below 1, showing that there is a lot of variation among humans.

Why Does This Matter?
Variation is what makes us unique. Some people have longer arm spans, which can be an advantage for sports like swimming or basketball. Others have different proportions that suit other activities. There is no “perfect” body shape—our differences make us special.
Our Conclusion
The Vitruvian theory is fascinating, but real life is much more diverse. We learned that variation is natural and important. It helps us adapt, excel in different areas, and makes the world an interesting place!
