This week in Rowan Class, we have been exploring our local area in lots of exciting ways. Using iPads, we looked at Google Maps and discovered what our community looks like from a bird’s eye view. We learned new vocabulary such as bird’s eye view, navigate, and landmarks, and the children enjoyed using these words while thinking about what they could see. Birmingham Airport was a favourite place to zoom into!

We also programmed Bee-Bots to move around maps of our local area, thinking carefully about directions and how to get each Bee-Bot to the right place. The children showed brilliant teamwork and problem-solving skills and made roads, tunnels and bridges with blocks and tubes.

To help us understand our surroundings even more, we drew places from our local area and looked at photographs from both the present and the past. The children were fascinated to see how Wherretts Well Lane, Elmdon Park, and Solihull have changed over time.

Rowan Class have worked wonderfully this week and are becoming fantastic young geographers!
