This week in Rowan Class, we have been busy developing our understanding of number bonds to 10.

Every morning during our early morning work before register, we have practised using a dice frame and counters. We have been carefully looking at how many red cakes and how many yellow cakes we can see on the board, helping us to identify the different parts that make up a number.

We have been using our stem sentence to explain our thinking:

“___ is a part, ___ is a part, and the whole is ___.”

This has helped us to talk clearly and confidently about our maths.

We have also been exploring number bonds using fluffy red and yellow pom poms.

“5 is a part, 5 is a part, and the whole is 10.”

From here, we worked hard to find other ways to make 10, showing the different parts that combine to make the whole.

In addition, we have been practising our doubles and thinking more deeply about how numbers can be split into parts in different ways. For example, we noticed that 5 itself can be made from smaller parts, helping us to build a stronger understanding of how numbers are constructed.
