This half term Year 5 have been developing their writing skills using the stimulus ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. The children have followed eleven plot points from the story and developed their use of personification, metaphors and similes. Each lesson we focus on three learning chunks to develop our sentences and then ‘stack’ them to create a cohesive narrative. The plot follows the character of Fred who is stranded in the Amazon jungle.

Over eleven lessons we focussed on developing powerful sentences and our sentence stack grew and grew!

We had experience days to help us to imagine how the character Fred would be feeling. In the story, Fred has an idea to create a raft. We worked as groups, in the different character roles, to create our own rafts. They all floated but may not be strong enough to sail us down the Amazon River!

We are now in the process of writing our own narrative. We have planned our seven plot points carefully and have thought about where to apply our different writing lenses such as personification, metaphors and time adverbials. We are looking forward to sharing our independent writing with you.
