Year 5 are currently learning about the artist Rachel Ducker. She is a British Contemporary artist based in Oxford. She sculpts the human form using wire. Her pieces are untitled due to her belief that everyone sees something different in the sculptures she creates. She is interested in how people use body language to reflect emotions and this is reflected in her sculptures.

Year 5 studied some of her sculptures and explored the different types of emotions that she was portraying. Grief, joy, fear, sadness, happiness were some of the ideas the children developed. The children explored sketching these emotions purely using body language to show the feelings. Then they used tin foil to create human sculptures.

The children followed key instructions to create the basic human sculpture in foil then they began to shape the arms and legs to create the posture to portray different emotions. Miss Allen was overwhelmed with how well the children sculpted the figures. Working with the foil was not easy as the children were required to handle the delicate material carefully. It is easily ripped and if pressed too forcefully then it lose all its shape. Overall, the quality of the sculptures were amazing.

What emotions can you identify?
