In Year 4, we are about to start out Fractions topic in Mathematics. Our first lesson was extremely fun and exciting where we built our own fraction walls to help us understand the basics of fractions.

First, we used a full strip of coloured paper to represent the whole and we labelled this as 1. We then used a different coloured strip of paper and folded it in half before snipping the strip into it’s two parts. This represented a ½.

We then continued down the fraction wall, using a different coloured strip for each fraction being represented. We represented 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6 and 1/7.

Here are some photographs of our finished fraction walls.

We then talked about what the term ‘equivalent’ meant. Our fraction walls were really helpful in helping us to compare and identify different equivalent fractions.

Jacob – ‘I know the word equivalent means the same as.’

Matthew K – ‘The word equivalent means something that is equal to.’

It was a little fiddly and tricky at times, but Year 4 did a wonderful job of persevering and being resilient!
