This morning, Year 5 were joined by our families for our Mathematics lesson. It was nice to be able to work alongside our family members and show them what our lessons look like. We began by completing our starter activity: Number of the Day. In this task we must apply different calculation skills to a given number e.g. square it, cube it, find the first 4 multiples, divide it etc.

Then we moved on to our main learning. The focus of today’s lesson was to calculate angles around a point. We recapped learning from yesterday and drew angles accurately using a protractor. We then discussed how we could calculate other angles.

There are 360 degrees in a full turn. Using this information we are able to calculate angles on a point. We worked alongside our adults and with a partner. Once we completed our questions we moved on to a challenge.

We enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside our adults. Our adults enjoyed the opportunity to come in to school and work with us. Here is some of the feedback we have received:

Did you enjoy the workshop?

“Yes, it was really enjoyable. It was very relaxing and comfortable.”

“Yes. Thank you for arranging the workshop.”

“Thoroughly enjoyed the workshop – all the children were engaged and all got involved. I enjoyed the style of teaching and how the children were told that if they got the answers wrong it was ok, as long as they tried their best.”

“Yes, I have really enjoyed seeing how a lesson runs.”

“Yes. Very much.”

Did you find the workshop useful?

“Yes, very useful. It gave me an insight into what Year 5 are learning about.”

“Yes. It was very inciteful. It has been great watching my child work out the answers and problem solve.”

“Very useful. It was good to see how a ‘typical’ lesson was taught.”

“Very much so. The format was brilliant as it was how a normal maths lesson is run which was very engaging for the adults and children.”

How will it help you to support your child?

“I will know the importance of ruler skills to practise at home and the terminology to use when using protractors like ‘origin’.”

“I can help my child at home.”

“Understanding angles. It will help with checking homework.”

“It was good to know how the children learn and the structure of the lesson and when my child is talking about angles, I’ll know how he’s taught this.”

What could we have done better? Is there anything you would like more information on?

“Nothing. It was perfect.”

“I wouldn’t change anything, thank you for running this session.”

“Thank you for a lovely morning! Nothing – it was very well planned.”

“Having been to many workshops over the years, I really think the format of seeing an actual lesson in action is the best sort of workshop.”

Thank you to families who joined us for our mathematical learning today – Miss Allen enjoyed having all of the extra adults to support us in our lesson – we hope that you enjoyed it too!
