Last week, Year 3 children visited the Birmingham Thinktank Science Museum to recap our learning about fossils and light! Lots of us had never visited the Thinktank before, so we were very excited to explore all of the different floors and exhibitions! Firstly, we looked around the Spitfire Gallery and the ‘We Made It’ exhibition. Some of us dressed up in a pilot’s uniform! (Even Miss Rowlands!)

Next up was our Dinosaur Discovery workshop! We were really excited to see lots of different types of fossil. The workshop started by recapping how fossils are made – Ricky pretended to be a prehistoric fish to demonstrate! Miss Rowlands was really impressed with how many of us volunteered to act out stages of the fossilisation process and we had lots of fun doing it. Then, we all shared around examples of fossils and tried to decide if they belonged to a dinosaur or not! Some of them were fossilised teeth, bones, plants and even fossilised poo!

After our workshop, we had some time to explore the wildlife and ‘Things About Me’ exhibitions. We had lots of fun here looking at different animals (including more fossils!) and interacting with things that taught us about our bodies!

After lunch, we went outside (despite the rain!) and explored the Science Garden. We all had lots of fun here! Even Mr Avent tackled the Hamster Wheel!

Finally, our day finished with a ‘Luminous Light’ workshop! We went into the theatre for this and learnt about the different sources of light, how shadows are made and we even saw an example of how rainbows are made! We also worked together to tell a story using shadow puppets – this was trickier than it looked, but it made the story a lot funnier!

Well done to all of the children in Poplar Class for their super behaviour during our trip. It was a busy, fun-filled and interesting day which helped us recap some of our favourite Science units from this year so far! Miss Rowlands would like to say another BIG thank you to Mrs Parsons, Mrs Lan, Mrs Dovey, Mr Avent and Miss Carr who joined us on our trip – we hope you all had as much fun as we did!

Callie: My favourite part of the day was visiting the Wildlife floor because I really like animals and they had lots of different ones to look at.

Alle: The science garden was mt favourite part because I liked playing with the boats in the water!

Amaya: My favourite part of the day was going into the theatre because it was really interesting to learn about shadows.

Millie: I loved wearing the pilot uniform!

Adriana: My favourite part of the day was going to the science garden because it was fun to touch the water and I really liked seeing the fossils.

Izzy: The Light Show was the best bit for me because the shadow puppets were really funny!

Cassidy: I liked the Science garden because there were lots of different things to look at. The Light Show was good when the UV light made our high vis jackets glow in the dark!

Jordan: The Light Show was funny. I liked the puppets because the mouse saved the day.

Alex: I liked playing the game using the bags and we had to guess if it was a maker or a faker (Children had to decide if the item was a light source or not)

Ricky: I liked meeting all of the teachers.
