In our final Art lesson this term, we used clay to create sculptures in the style of the artist Rachel Ducker. In our previous blog post, we shared with you that we had made foil sculptures in the style of her artwork.

Foil Sculptures – Tudor Grange Primary Academy Yew Tree (tgacademy.org.uk)

Rachel Ducker uses body language to portray emotions. Her sculptures do not have facial features. First we removed any air from our clay using a technique called ‘wedging’ and then thought about what type of emotion we wanted to show.

Working with the class was more challenging that when we used foil. We needed to consider the weight of the clay and how much clay we needed to use for each part of the body. We needed to make sure our sculpture would be durable as we didn’t want parts to fall off!

We used a slip and scoring technique to join the parts of our sculpture together. We used our clay pots to hold our water – although some of them leaked!

Our finished sculptures are currently air drying. We hope that you like them.

What different emotions can you see being portrayed?
